On July 17, 2024, a historic moment was marked in the Federal Parliament as the status of the Bintulu Port Authority was changed from a Federal Port to a State Port, heralding a new chapter for Sarawak.
The Bintulu Port Authority, established on February 5, 1981, was dissolved on July 17, 2024, after a 43-year journey. Throughout its lifespan, the Bintulu Port Authority became a hub of port knowledge for the community in Bintulu, Sarawak, and Malaysia.
The port developed a successful model, emerging as the world's largest LNG exporter, the second largest port in Malaysia, and the largest in Kalimantan Island.
This success led to the creation of a privatization model and the establishment of Bintulu Port Sdn Bhd as a port operator.
The port's ecosystem attracted numerous industry players, created direct and indirect job opportunities, and drew investments into port activities.
Over time, the Bintulu Port Authority built the port from the ground up, regulated port activities and services, developed performance standards, and enforced good practices based on IMO, PIANC standards, and other international protocols.
It established a unique standard for port management, recognized by many global port players.
